One day, you’re riding high on a wave of inspiration. Thousands of words. Pages of ideas. Multiple stories. Everyone talking at once in your head. "The Flow" I call it.

Then.

Crickets.

The page will always be blank and all those words you wrote the other day? Garbage. Your ideas are garbage. You yourself are garbage. Why would anyone read this? Time to give up.

It’s not for the faint-hearted, but for those of us who live and breathe our stories, it’s the only way to live.

Want a peek at the chaotic, thrilling, and sometimes maddening journey? If nothing else, you'll know you're not alone.

More Than Just Writing

People think writing means sitting at a desk, typing away in solitude. Sure, that’s part of it. (The best part, honestly.) But it's also about juggling priorities, marketing (AHHHHH!!!!!!), networking, and constantly learning new skills (most having to do with algorithms).

When I’m not crafting a new thriller or piecing together a gritty cop drama, I’m managing social media, responding to readers, and taking marketing classes. (Oh, and running the website!) It’s a full-time hustle. And let’s not forget the emotional rollercoaster - the thrill of finishing a chapter, the frustration of writer’s block, the anxiety of reading feedback. (Did you know everyone hates third-person omniscient narration? Did you also know that everyone loves third-person omniscient narration?)

This is where the writer life really kicks in. It’s a blend of passion and persistence, creativity and business savvy. If you want to survive and thrive, you have to wear many hats.

The Highs and Lows

Writing a thriller or a gripping procedural fiction is like playing a high-stakes game. You’re constantly balancing tension, pacing, and character development. When it all clicks, it’s pure magic. But when it doesn’t, it can feel like you’re banging your head against a wall.

Here’s the truth: every author faces rejection. Every author battles self-doubt. Every author wrestles with deadlines that seem impossible. But the highs? They’re worth every low.

  • The Joys: Finishing a manuscript, hearing from a reader who loved your book, seeing your work in print, or getting that first five-star review. These moments are like fuel for the soul.

  • The Challenges: Writer’s block, tight deadlines, balancing writing with life responsibilities, and the constant pressure to promote yourself and your work.

One thing I’ve learned is to embrace both. The lows teach you resilience. The highs remind you why you started.

Balancing Creativity and Discipline in the Writer Life

Knowing that the key is consistency!

For me, it's broken into segments. I take at least 15 minutes in the morning to run through ad metrics, check overnight trending stats, and fine-tune my marketing and social cadence for the week. Then I spend at least a half an hour writing (or editing), more if I've got it.

In the evening, I dedicate a few hours to "The Flow". Whatever comes out. That's the juice. That's what I want to fall asleep thinking about and wake up refreshed to approach again.

Then three days per week I manage the business elements, create content in batches and otherwise try to stay away from the Void that is social media. That's what works for me, but more importantly, keeps me grounded to the work itself.

Discipline is the backbone of the writer life. It’s what turns ideas into pages and pages into books.

Why the Life of an Author is Worth It

Every book is a journey - for the writer and the reader. And when you hold that finished novel in your hands, knowing you brought it to life, it’s a feeling like no other.

If you’re drawn to the dark alleys of crime fiction or the adrenaline rush of military thrillers, you know the power of a well-told story. And that’s what keeps me going. The promise of the next great story waiting to be told.

Remember, the life of an author is a marathon, not a sprint. Celebrate the small wins, learn from the setbacks, and keep your eyes on the prize.
